Dock Life Chose Me

The Dock Boss

Peli Pelican

Calm. Unimpressed. Deadly accurate when it counts.

Dock life chose me.

Peli has been at the pier since before you got here. He will be at the pier after you leave. This is not a schedule. This is simply how things are.

He's deep in it with the morning crew — four pelicans, two cormorants, one very confused tourist who thought he could sit on that piling. (He could not. That's Peli's piling.) The conversation is fish. It is always fish. Who's running, what depth, which sandbar, what bait, what moon phase, whether that guy from the bait shop actually knows anything or is just very confident.

Peli asks a lot of questions. Great questions. Specific questions. He listens carefully, nods slowly, offers thoughtful analysis.

He does not tell you where he fishes.

Nobody knows exactly where Peli fishes. This is intentional. This is sacred. The locals understand. The tourists ask and he says "oh, all around" and gestures broadly at the entire Gulf of Mexico.

The fish are good this week. That's all you're getting.
